The black communities in the mountains of NC fought to give their children a quality education. They understood to be truly free, they needed to have a good education. When integration came, it brought the black community better facilities, but it came at a high price. Their beloved institutions that had helped shape their identity and their heritage were torn asunder. This is their story.
